Why

“The file exceeds the maximum allowed size”

The town-hall form, the scholarship portal, the listings site, some e-mails: all have a limit, and a phone photo usually exceeds it two or three times over. There is nothing wrong with the photo; it is simply bigger than the recipient needs.

The tool lowers JPG quality first, in small steps, and only if it still does not fit does it reduce pixels. The photo looks the same on screen, and the file is under the limit.

What you can do

  • Opens JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC; saves JPG or WebP

What it does not do

  • It does not keep EXIF data in the new file — even if you want it
  • It does not save PNG: for photos, PNG is several times larger, so it would not help
  • It does not crop or apply filters

Questions

Is quality lost?
The tool lowers JPG quality in small steps and stops at the first version that fits under the limit. Under 2 MB, almost any photo keeps its original dimensions and the difference does not show on screen. Under 200 KB a large photo will lose pixels too; it still looks fine on screen, and shows in large print.
Why quality first and pixels only after?
Most of the saving comes from JPG quality, without changing dimensions. Many tools do it the other way round, or both at once, which is why a “compressed photo” sometimes looks far worse than it needed to.
Do my photos reach your server?
No. Shrinking happens in your browser, on your device. You can check: switch the internet off after the page has loaded and carry on.
What does “still over the limit” mean?
Each level has a floor below which it will not push quality or dimensions, so it never ruins a photo silently. If the photo still does not fit, choose “Strong” or a larger limit.
Does it work with iPhone HEIC photos?
Yes. It opens them directly and saves them as JPG under the chosen limit. On Windows and Android the page loads a decoder of about 1.4 MB, once.
