Locations with names on WhatsApp, not bare links

When you share a location from Google Maps, WhatsApp shows only a link. Get three and you can't tell which is which. Here you see which place each link is, and send yours with the name and address visible.

Send your locations with a name

Set it up once. After that you share as usual, from Google Maps, with the same number of taps.

On Android

  1. Open this page in Chrome.
  2. From the ⋮ menu, choose “Install app” or “Add to Home screen”.
  3. From now on, in Google Maps tap Share and choose Tangled. WhatsApp opens with the place's name and address already written.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut.
  2. Add the “Replace Text” action: find maps.app.goo.gl and replace it with tangled-design.ro/l, in the Shortcut Input.
  3. Add the “Share” action. In the shortcut's details, turn on “Show in Share Sheet” and name it “Location with name”.
  4. From now on, in Google Maps tap Share, choose “Location with name”, then WhatsApp.

On any phone, no install

In the link from Google Maps, replace maps.app.goo.gl with tangled-design.ro/l. On WhatsApp the link shows the place's name, address and an image, and whoever taps it goes straight to Google Maps.

How it works

  • The short Google Maps link leads to an address that already contains the place's name and address. We just read it, once.
  • Whoever receives a tangled-design.ro/l link sees the name, address and an image in the preview. Tapping it goes straight to Google Maps, with no extra step.
  • The name comes only from Google, for that link's code. Nobody can put a made-up name or another address on our link.
  • No account, no e-mail, and we don't keep your locations.

Questions

Why do Google Maps locations show up on WhatsApp as just a link?
The page behind the short Google Maps link gives previews the title “Google Maps” and a generic map, without the place's name. So WhatsApp shows only the link, or a preview that doesn't say which place it is.
Does the person receiving the link need to install anything?
No. They see the name and address right in WhatsApp, and the link takes them to Google Maps as before. Installing is only for the sender, and optional.
What happens to my locations?
The link passes once through our server so we can find the place's name, and the result stays in memory for a day so we don't ask Google every time. We keep no lists of locations, don't know who sent what, and use the data for nothing else.
Does it work for pins dropped by hand?
Yes. An unnamed pin shows as “Location on the map” with its coordinates, and the link opens in Google Maps or Waze at exactly that point.
